Dear Clients, When you’re leading a group of people, you HAVE to be comfortable communicating with them. Whether your team is made up of two people or two thousand people, honing in on your communication skills is crucial for success overall. The words you choose will help to inspire and motivate your team, so the words you choose are important. Be sure that you’re able to write down your overall point in a concise way so that it can be summed up in a short sentence – sort of akin to an elevator pitch. If your team walks away from your meeting or lecture and can’t wrap up what the point of it was in one sentence, they’ll likely forget it. Another thing to keep in mind is the importance of staying confident, despite how nervous you might feel. Your body language makes up 75% of your communication, don’t ruin your awesome speech by crossing your arms, making yourself small, or speaking too quietly. Everyone has a different style of speaking. You don’t have to memorize everything. If you feel more comfortable with a PowerPoint, great. If you want to give out handouts, do it. Use whatever tools you need in order to feel confident because confidence is key in motivating your team! In order to help overcome the fear of standing up and speaking up in front of people, try adjusting your stance! Psychology has proven that spending just two minutes in a “power pose” can increase testosterone and decrease cortisol (a stress hormone). Next time you’re about to do something that makes you nervous; try one of these high power poses: Tall and Proud – Lift up your arms in a V shape and elevate your chin. Hold the pose. Hold each pose for two minutes – duck into a bathroom stall if you have to!
